Sliceform Christmas Tree with Angled Slices

Why is this sliceform papercraft tree special?  The slices fan out from the center axis at increasing angles rather than being perpendicular to the center slice.

Compare to this conventional Christmas tree sliceform pop up card with perpendicular slices.

Assembly is like any sliceform.  Because this cut file is designed to be a pop up card, I have configured the slots to lock the pieces so they won't fall apart even if you turn the card upside down and shake it!

Finished size of card is 4.25" square.

Cut and score tree pieces: black lines are cut lines, green lines are score lines.  

Cut and score card base: black cut lines, green score lines.

Cut 2 pieces of decorative paper to cover front and back of card, each 4" x 4".

In this tutorial I have used rainbow colors to help you see the process.

Pieces 1 and 2 slide together.  Put the feet of piece 1 through the center slot of slice 2. 

Bend slice 1 and bow out center slot of slice 2 to get the top in place.

Slide piece 3 through into the next slot of piece 1.  Push it through only as far as the long slot of piece 3.  Use that slot to slide the piece down, swing the piece in,  and hook in small top slot.  

Slide piece 3 as far up as it will go, fold up the little foot at the bottom,  slide the piece to the left and into place. Unfold foot.

Repeat with the other piece 3, on the opposite side of the tree.

Add piece 4, on opposite sides of tree.

Piece 4 joins to both piece 2 and pieces 3.

Add pieces 5, one on either side.

Piece 5 attaches to piece 2 and pieces 3.

Add piece 6.  Piece 6 slots to THREE pieces: piece 1, piece 4, and piece 5.

Add piece 7 on piece 1.  

Add the second piece 7 to the adjacent piece 2--NOT on the opposite side of the tree.

Bend up the feet of piece 8.

Slide piece 8 onto the remaining side of piece 1 and 2.

The feet should look like this, adjacent to each other.

Notice there is an empty slot left on pieces 1 and 2.  It has no function except I like the way it looks!

Now insert the tree into the card base using the feet.

Flatten the tree with the two sets of feet on top of each other.

The bottom feet go into the slot on the right-hand side of the card.

Push them through to the back.

Partially close the card and push the top feet through the slot on the left-hand side of the card.

Close the card and pull the feet all the way through.

When they are all the way in, they will bend easily on the score lines.  Tape across both sets of feet.

Adhere decorative paper to front and back of card to cover the feet.
